Wash and soak the green gram (moong dal) in water for about 2-3 hours.

Drain the water and cook the soaked green gram in a pressure cooker with enough water for 2-3 whistles or until soft but not mushy.

Heat oil in a pan over medium heat. Add mustard seeds and let them splutter.

Add urad dal and sauté until it turns golden brown.

Add chopped green chilies, curry leaves, and asafoetida. Sauté for a few seconds.
