Rinse the basmati rice under cold water until the water runs clear. Soak the rice in water for 30 minutes, then drain.

Heat the vegetable oil in a large pan over medium heat. Add the sliced onion and sauté until golden brown.

Add the ginger-garlic paste and green chilies to the pan. Sauté for another minute until fragrant.

Add the chopped tomatoes, red chili powder, turmeric powder, and salt. Cook until the tomatoes are soft and the oil starts to separate.
