Rinse the basmati rice thoroughly under cold water until the water runs clear. Soak the rice in water for about 20 minutes.

While the rice is soaking, finely chop the onion, tomatoes, and green chili.

Heat the oil in a large pan over medium heat. Add the mustard seeds and cumin seeds. Let them splutter for a few seconds.

Add the chopped onion and green chili to the pan. Sauté until the onion becomes translucent.

Add the chopped tomatoes and turmeric powder. Cook until the tomatoes become soft and mushy.
