Rinse the toor dal thoroughly and pressure cook it with 2 cups of water and a pinch of turmeric powder until soft.

In a pot, heat the oil over medium heat. Add mustard seeds and let them splutter.

Add curry leaves and chopped onions. Sauté until the onions turn translucent.

Add chopped tomatoes and cook until they become soft.

Add sambar powder, remaining turmeric powder, and salt. Mix well.
