Wash the toor dal thoroughly and cook it in a pressure cooker with 1 cup of water until soft. Once cooked, mash it well and set aside.

Chop the tomatoes and add them to a pot with 3 cups of water. Bring to a boil and let it simmer until the tomatoes are soft.

Add the tamarind paste, turmeric powder, and salt to the pot. Stir well and let it simmer for another 5 minutes.
