Rinse the basmati rice thoroughly under cold water until the water runs clear. Soak the rice in water for about 20 minutes, then drain.

Heat oil in a large pan over medium heat. Add mustard seeds and cumin seeds. Allow them to splutter.

Add the sliced onion and sauté until they turn golden brown.

Add the ginger-garlic paste and green chilies. Sauté for another minute until the raw smell disappears.

Add the chopped tomatoes and turmeric powder. Cook until the tomatoes become soft and mushy.

Add the soaked and drained rice to the pan. Stir gently to mix the rice with the tomato mixture.

Add 4 cups of water and salt to taste. Bring the mixture to a boil.

Once it starts boiling, reduce the heat to low, cover the pan with a lid, and let it simmer until the rice is cooked and all the water is absorbed.
