Rinse the basmati rice under cold water until the water runs clear. Soak the rice in water for about 30 minutes.

Rinse the split red lentils under cold water until the water runs clear. Set aside.

Finely chop the onion, tomatoes, garlic, and ginger.

In a pot, heat 1 tablespoon of vegetable oil over medium heat. Add the cumin seeds and let them sizzle for a few seconds.

Add the chopped onion and sauté until golden brown.

Add the garlic and ginger, and sauté for another minute.

Add the chopped tomatoes, turmeric powder, red chili powder, and salt. Cook until the tomatoes are soft and the oil starts to separate from the mixture.
