Rinse the yellow lentils thoroughly under cold water until the water runs clear.

In a large pot, add the lentils and 600ml of water. Bring to a boil, then reduce the heat and simmer for 20-25 minutes until the lentils are tender.

In a separate pan, heat the vegetable oil over medium heat. Add the finely chopped onion and sauté until golden brown.
