Rinse the toor dal thoroughly under running water until the water runs clear. Soak the dal in water for 20 minutes, then drain.

In a pressure cooker, add the soaked toor dal and 3 cups (720ml) of water. Add

5 teaspoon turmeric powder and 1 teaspoon salt. Pressure cook for 4-5 whistles or until the dal is soft and cooked. Set aside.

Heat 1 tablespoon (15ml) vegetable oil in a pan over medium heat. Add 1 teaspoon cumin seeds and let them splutter.

Add the chopped onion (100g) and sauté until golden brown.

Add 1 tablespoon (15g) ginger-garlic paste and sauté for 1 minute until the raw smell disappears.

Add the chopped green chilies (2 pieces) and sauté for 30 seconds.

Add the chopped tomatoes (200g) and cook until they turn soft and oil starts to separate from the masala.

Add 1 teaspoon garam masala and mix well. Cook for another minute.

Pour the cooked dal into the pan and mix everything together. Adjust salt if needed. Simmer for 5-7 minutes, stirring occasionally, until the dal thickens to your desired consistency.
