Rinse the basmati rice under cold water until the water runs clear. Soak the rice in water for 30 minutes, then drain.

Heat 2 tbsp of vegetable oil in a large pot over medium heat. Add the thinly sliced onion and cook until golden brown.

Add the minced garlic and ginger to the pot and sauté for 1-2 minutes until fragrant.
