Rinse the basmati rice under cold water until the water runs clear. Soak the rice in water for 30 minutes, then drain.

Heat 2 tablespoons of vegetable oil in a large pot over medium heat. Add cumin seeds and let them splutter.

Add sliced onions and sauté until golden brown.

Add minced garlic, grated ginger, and chopped green chilies. Sauté for another 2 minutes.

Add chopped tomatoes and cook until they become soft and mushy.
