Season the chicken breasts with salt and pepper.
In a large skillet, melt 1 tablespoon of butter over medium heat. Add the chicken breasts and cook until golden brown on both sides and no longer pink in the middle, about 5-7 minutes per side. Remove from skillet and set aside.
In the same skillet, add the remaining butter and minced garlic. Sauté for about 1 minute until fragrant.
Pour in the heavy cream and bring to a simmer. Allow the cream to reduce slightly, then add the grated Parmesan cheese and stir until the cheese is melted and the sauce is creamy.
Meanwhile, cook the fettuccine pasta according to the package instructions in a large pot of salted boiling water until al dente. Drain the pasta and reserve some of the pasta water.
Slice the cooked chicken into strips.
Add the cooked pasta to the skillet with the Alfredo sauce, tossing to coat. If the sauce is too thick, add a little of the reserved pasta water to reach your desired consistency.
Serve the pasta with the sliced chicken on top. Garnish with extra Parmesan cheese and freshly ground black pepper if desired.
