Rinse the basmati rice under cold water until the water runs clear. Soak the rice in water for about 20 minutes, then drain.
Heat the olive oil in a large pan over medium heat. Add the cumin seeds and let them sizzle for a few seconds until fragrant.
Add the chopped onion to the pan and sauté until it becomes translucent and slightly golden.

Add 2 cups of water and salt to taste. Bring the mixture to a boil.
Once boiling, reduce the heat to low, cover the pan with a lid, and let it simmer for about 15-20 minutes, or until the rice is cooked and the water is absorbed.
Fluff the rice with a fork and serve hot.
