Rinse the basmati rice under cold water until the water runs clear. Soak the rice in water for 30 minutes, then drain.

Heat 2 tablespoons of vegetable oil in a large pot over medium heat. Add the sliced onions and sauté until golden brown.

Add the minced garlic, grated ginger, and chopped green chilies to the pot. Sauté for another 2 minutes.

Add the chopped tomatoes, biryani masala, turmeric powder, red chili powder, and salt. Cook until the tomatoes are soft and the oil starts to separate from the mixture.
