Rinse the toor dal thoroughly under running water until the water runs clear.
In a pressure cooker, add the rinsed toor dal and 4 cups of water. Cook for 3-4 whistles or until the dal is soft and mushy.
Once the pressure releases, open the cooker and mash the dal slightly with a ladle.
In a pan, heat the ghee over medium heat. Add mustard seeds and let them splutter.
Add cumin seeds and asafoetida, and sauté for a few seconds.
Add the slit green chilies and sauté for another minute.
Add the mashed dal to the pan along with turmeric powder, jaggery, and salt. Mix well.
Let the dal simmer for about 10 minutes, stirring occasionally.
Add lemon juice and grated coconut, and mix well.
Garnish with chopped coriander leaves before serving.
Serve hot with rice or roti.
