Rinse the green moong dal and rice thoroughly under running water. Soak them together in water for at least 4-6 hours or overnight.
Drain the soaked dal and rice, and blend them into a smooth batter using a little water. The batter should be of pouring consistency, similar to pancake batter.
Add salt to taste and mix well. Let the batter ferment for 4-6 hours in a warm place.
Once fermented, add chopped onions, tomatoes, green chilies, coriander leaves, and cumin seeds to the batter. Mix well.
Heat a non-stick pan or griddle over medium heat and grease it lightly with oil.
Pour a ladleful of batter onto the pan and spread it gently to form a thick pancake.
Drizzle a little oil around the edges and cook until the bottom is golden brown and the top is cooked.
Flip the uttapam and cook the other side until golden brown.
Remove from the pan and serve hot with chutney or sambar.
